Obituary Schuyler C. Baldwin
Passed Away Friday at Grand RapidsSchuyler C. Baldwin, a pioneer resident of Kalamazoo, passed away quietly Friday night at the U.B.A. Hospital at Grand Rapids, where he had been during the past three weeks under the treatment of his nephew, Dr. S. C. Graves. Mr. Baldwin was 78 years of age, and although he had be in declining health for some time past his condition had not been considered serious until recently. He was a descendant of the old Schuyler family of Pompton, N.J., and showed his blue blood and aristocratic lineage in the life he led -- one of gentleness, quiet and reserve -- a life that while it did not serve to make him a man prominent in political or business circles, still endeared him to a host of warm friends, who found him habitually courteous and kindly.
Mr. Baldwin came to Kalamazoo in 1850 and had lived here since that time, his home being on Academy street. He was a great lover of the game of croquet, and was one of the champion players of the country. For some time he was the finest photographer in the city, being considered an artist in his line, especially in landscape work. He was a member of the Baptist church and altogether a very lovable man. He was never married. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Graves and Mrs. Mary Eddy of Grand Rapids, and Will Graves, a nephew, one of the editors of the Chicago Tribune.
The funeral services were conducted at the twilight hour Saturday evening. Interment was in the family lot at Grand Rapids.
