How the Houses Were Lighted

The blaze of the large open firs furnished all the light needed in the main room for ordinary purposes. If the boys and girls desired light to prepare their lessons for the next dayÕs school, they would bring pine knots from the forest for the needed additional light.

Portable lights were prepared by coiling a narrow piece of twisted cotton cloth in a dish of lard. Tallow candles run in moulds came into early use.
