• The History of Rumford, Maine (1890): "William Godwin...is said to have been a soldier in Burgoyne's army, to have deserted and come across from New York to Massachusetts. The name under which he enlisted was William Redmond, which was doubtless his real name. After coming to Massachusetts, he assumed the name of Godwin, said to have been the family of his mother. Another story is that he deserted from an English Man of War."
• The Family Legend, Line of William Godwin of Garland and Sangerville: Tells that somewhere along the line, a husband's name was Redman and he took the wife's name Godwin upon marriage, because of the sentiment toward Indians at the time.
• William and Rachel probably met in Massachusetts and married at an unknown location, likely Massachusetts or New Hampshire. They seem to have lived in New Hampshire for a time, as several of their older children list it as their birthplace on census records. They then spent time in Fryeburg, Maine, which is right on the New Hampshire-Maine border, before moving to Rumford in 1792, where their five youngest children were born. |
