Godwin is Anglo-Saxon name meaning God's friend and is usually found in the UK and in former English colonies such as the United States, Canada and Australia. Common misspellings of the name Godwin include Godin, Gadwin, Godwen, Godwyn, Godwynne, Godwine or Godwinne, this list includes those spelling variations. Please stay on topic. 9. Most email programs can send attachments (attached files) but *do not* send these to the list. (Some programs will send a small attachment with your signature or something like that and you can't shut that off; that's okay.) This isn't a problem for the mail server, but these can cause some subscribers' machines to lock up, make them lose all their mail, even crash their hard drive! A GEDCOM file can be a huge attachment; so can an encoded graphics file (if you don't know what those are, you probably won't be sending them, but a lot of you will understand these terms). If you want people to have these, announce them via the list and have people send you a private email requesting them. However, these should absolutely not be sent to the whole list. 10. DO NOT SEND VIRUS OR HOAX WARNINGS, SOLICITATIONS OR ANY MESSAGE OF THIS TYPE. If you think something like this should be sent to the list, mail it to me first so I can check it out. It's not important whether the threat/message is true or false... if it's not genealogy-related, please don't send it. 11. Regarding spam: Because the Rootsweb genealogy lists are so popular they are often targets for spammers. I see every message that comes through the list and when a junk mail address arrives I immediately forward it to the Rootsweb Anti-Spam Guy, Tim. His address regarding spam is abuse@rootsweb.com. You don't need to let me know when a junk mail message comes through to the Godwin-L or Godwin-D addresses, as I will take care of it. The RootsWeb Anti-Spam Folks then add the offending address list which then blocks those people from targeting us again. I frequently get messages showing that various junk messages have been blocked. If you find that you are getting spam from other sources you may want to forward it to the federal government at uce@ftc.gov which is an address at the Federal Trade Commission which is collecting and studying junk email.
